The Smokehouse, Folkestone: Sustainable local fish, with chips cooked in beef dripping

The misleading name apparently comes from the site’s former incarnation as a fish smokery – now, though, The Smokehouse is serving unbelievably delicious upmarket fish and chips.  Head chef is Mark Sargeant, and this posh chippy is just a stone’s throw from Rocksalt, his well-known flagship restaurant.

The fish is sourced locally and sustainably as far as possible (just as well, given The Smokehouse’s proximity to the harbour!), and chips are cooked the proper old fashioned way – in beef dripping!  (Though vegetable oil and gluten free options are available.)

Kick off with mussel popcorn, salt and pepper squid or a mussel bhaji with yoghurt dip (incredible!), before moving onto a main fish dish (portions are huge, by the way).  At 85p a pot, the homemade tartare sauce may seem a bit spendy, but it’s absolutely incredible and not to be skipped!

Eat in or out.  The restaurant features chunky wooden tables and minimalist décor, with floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the harbour.  This is an upmarket chippy with modern twists at every turn – make it your first stop when in Folkestone.
