In a prime location on Curtain Road, Joyeux Bordel is another of those cocktail bars that goes under the radar unless you’re really looking out for it, being totally nondescript from the road.
Why visit Joyeux Bordel?
Once downstairs, beneath the streets of Shoreditch, you’ll find yourself in the darkest bar in all of London. So dark in fact, that a first online date here could have seriously dire consequences! Assuming you do manage to locate your +1, the darkness can be described as “romantic” or “atmospheric”, and all will be well!
Furniture is plush, the soundtrack is ambient (though the genre of music doesn’t stick in my mind) and the staff are keen to advise when it comes to the menu.
There’s a fairly comprehensive list of potent drinks (though I’m certain the barmen could go off-menu and whip up all the classics wonderfully too), and drinks are served in pleasingly weighty glasses, with chunky shards of ice. The calibre of the drinks will come as no surprise when I tell you that JB is the newest member of the Experimental Cocktail Club family – those guys know their mixology! Normal Shoreditch cocktail price applies, at around £10 a pop.
With the light levels only a couple of grades above ‘pitch black’ this is a super moody spot for a date, and the speakeasy nature will earn you kudos too!
