With a reputation for great coffee and cheesecake, Five Elephant was a compulsory stop for us when in Berlin. Five Elephant’s coffee is roasted on site – it is also served in various other cafés around Berlin, but we wanted to go right to the source, in Kreuzberg!
The café glowed invitingly as we dashed in from the drizzle, ordering two pour over filter coffees and sitting up at a high table.
Use of laptops is only allowed in the back room, which was pleasant as it meant the main room was gently humming with activity (this separation of work and play seems quite common in Berlin cafés). The walls feature huge maps and a large bouquet of tulips brightened the bar.
The display of cakes and cookies was impressive, and several people came in to purchase ginormous slices of cheesecake to take away – evidence of its greatness, for sure.
The slightly remote location is a bummer, but Five Elephant’s virtues make the trek worthwhile, and it’s a perfect spot to while away an afternoon.
