Austin is full of things to do, whether it’s culture, adventure, gastronomy or music that you’re after. But I made a discovery of a different nature that it’s imperative you visit during your stay. Its name, The Corner Shoppe, doesn’t give much away – but it certainly does stay true to the saying “Keep Austin weird“!
The Corner Shoppe is a bit of a drive out of central Austin, but there’s plenty of space to park when you arrive. So what does this shop sell exactly? It’s a huge warehouse packed, quite literally, to the rafters with animals. Taxidermied animals!
You name it, they’ve got it. Buffalo bison, polar bears, grizzly bears, giraffes, meerkats, deer, gazelles, lions, pigs, hippos, swordfish…
It’s all authentic, and the sheer breadth of range and depth of stock is mind-blowing – and in some cases, downright ludicrous… There are raccoons in canoes and armadillos drinking beer…
There are also a great number of fictional jackalopes – these were my fave.
Out the back is a yard with more! Hundreds of antlers to mount on the wall, and containers full of bone and horn in every size and shape imaginable.
The staff are super knowledgeable and so passionate about their products – they were more than happy to give us a full explanation of the taxidermying process and details of the industry.
If you’re after a true Texan holiday memento, you can’t get much more authentic than a pair of longhorns (for around $300)!
