Williamsburg is bursting with awesome coffee spots. My latest discovery is small but perfectly formed, nondescript from the outside but wonderfully designed once you’re in, where Metropolitan and Bedford Avenues meet: Sweatshop.
Although the Sweatshop website simply states “We are just two Aussies making flat whites and designing cool shit for a living,” it’s so much more than that! The pair serve excellent Aussie coffee in a high design space – it’s a Melbourne-style café and a design studio, which explains the beauty.
I joined a bunch of photographer and graphic designer types glued to MacBooks, to drink an Aussie iced coffee (iced almond milk and espresso with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, prettily presented in a jam jar) and an old fashioned baked doughnut.
There’s a variety of design studio merchandise on display too – I took home a Sweatshop-designed poster ($55) as a perpetual reminder of the great coffee and beautiful Brooklyn space.
