On the corner of Bowery and Delancey is Sel Rrose, a beautiful space furnished with a touch of early 20th century Parisian style, and a sprinkling of “demolition chic“.
The bar’s name is inspired by Marcel Duchamp (or Rrose Sélavy, his feminine alter ego!), the French-born New York-loving artist. From 1913 onwards, Duchamp did very little painting, instead creating ‘Readymades‘ – ordinary, everyday objects that he designated as works of art – a bicycle wheel, a snow shovel, a graffitied urinal… In Sel Rrose, industrial elements are incorporated into the décor, paying homage to Duchamp’s Readymades, to stylish effect.
Cocktails here are inspired by Duchamp’s artworks that used perfume bottles. A Lavender Piscine cocktail was delicate and refreshing, combining Champagne with a mist of grapefruit bitters, and a sprig of the little purple flower balanced precariously on a huge block of ice.
A long bar stretches the length of the rectangular room, with more tables round the perimeter (and sometimes out on the sidewalk too). If I were you, I’d pull up a high stool and enjoy super fresh oysters – the menu features a revolving selection of New American fare, plus a full raw bar.
Sel Rrose opens at 5pm with an oyster happy hour – it’s just $1 a pop until 7pm (and all day Sunday) – an offer that’s hard to refuse!
Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm, with mouthwatering dishes like Oyster Eggs Benedict, lobster rolls and a signature burger. Yum.
There’s a private dining room too…
