Having stayed at the Ace Hotel in Midtown New York I was dying to check out the Ace on this side of the pond, in Shoreditch. I often frequent the lobby bar area of Ace Shoreditch, amongst all the other MacBooks and hipsters at the work station, but would the rest of the hotel live up to my lofty expectations? I can assure you it certainly did.
The design approach for the hotel’s rooms was to think of them as a friend’s Shoreditch apartment. This explains the in-room collections of furniture and objects that appear to have been acquired over time, as if each has stories and memories attached.
Useful bits and bobs are supplied for guest’s consumption too – such as maps, sketch pads, books and records, and the amenities include Revo radios, record players, quilts by A.P.C., leather change trays by Ally Capellino, Farmers’ bath products and even electric guitars in some rooms! In the lobby there’s a photo booth and Tokyo Bikes for guest use, further adding to Ace’s sense of fun.
Hoi Polloi is the hotel’s brasserie-style restaurant, a collaboration between the founders of Bistrotheque and Ace that takes a super seasonal approach to English produce.
I can highly recommend the restaurant for brunch, though it’s great for working with a coffee, or enjoying a full supper too.
Also in the hotel are Bulldog Edition, a collaboration with Square Mile Coffee Roasters, and Lovage, which serves cold-pressed juices and ice creams. Oh and a flower shop, naturally…!
The lobby space is a hub for socialising, working or relaxing. There are sink-into-me sofas, a long 16-seat communal table for laptops or individual tables within the gallery space for informal meetings.
Overall, the hotel has been influenced by a wide range of design genres, from clean-lined Modernist to UK punk to bold graphic Vorticist – the eclectic combination is kind of reflective of the surrounding area and culture, fitting right in with Shoreditch and its dynamic, creative, casual and unusual vibe, making it a sure-fire hit with aesthetically inclined travellers.
