Good news: Austin gives good coffee! Houndstooth Coffee is located at the base of the Frost building in central Austin – that’s the building built to look like a giant iceberg, which can be seen from most parts of the city – always visible to guide you towards good coffee! My dad visits daily and goes on and on about the cappuccinos at this place, so I made it my mission to catch up with the owner Paul while I was in town, for a V60 pour over coffee and chat.
There are actually two Houndstooth outposts in Austin – the original café is up in north Austin, and can be found flooded with Texan sunlight almost year-round…
It’s the Downtown location that’s been featured in Wallpaper magazine thanks to it’s striking red subway-tiled feature wall and industrial furniture.
Houndstooth is unusual because the baristas actually smile – unlike most hipster coffee shops where your latte arrives with no more than a nod and a grunt.
Plus the Houndstooth team really know their stuff, so you can wax lyrical about your perfect cup of joe and your server will be able to help you select the best coffee for you – there’s always a few on offer, some guest coffees and then others from Houndstooth’s small batch sister roastery, Tweed, in Dallas.
Four times a week you can stop by for a coffee tasting (or cupping) session – it’s a great chance to try a few different coffees and learn a bit more about the origin, processes and flavours – and it’s all free.
