T.E.D Restaurant: Seasonal, ethical food for thought

The King’s Cross neighbourhood is on the up.  With Dishoom and Caravan attracting crowds to Granary Square, and members club Keystone Crescent recently opening its door just off Caledonian Road, there’s no denying it.  And now T.E.D is giving you another reason to head to N1.

T.E.D stands for Think.Eat.Drink, an initiative focused on ethics that aims to change the way the food industry approaches its supply chain.  The restaurant is founded by Jamie Grainger-Smith who has worked on icons like Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and The River Cafe, and now brings you T.E.D with its unique atmosphere and memorable interior just a stone’s throw from the station.

Every décor detail has been considered, and a relaxing atmosphere created.  The Modern British menu essentially delivers a chance for guilt-free indulgence, since it’s created from totally seasonal and ethically sourced British ingredients.  There are a number of house dishes that are staples on the menu, complemented by a selection of specials that take seasonal ingredients and turn them into something unexpected.

The wine list spans the globe and features a variety of biodynamic and carbon-neutral bottles, and the bar (which is tiled with original colourful ceramics that were discovered when the T.E.D site was first renovated) produces creative tipples using organic spirits and mixers.

I arrived on a quiet Monday evening and, fuelled by an in-season blood orange Bellini, spent the first twenty minutes photographing and Instagram-ing madly – T.E.D is just so photogenic!

I was meeting Rhiannon, who’s my kind of girl – she exercises like mad (triathlons, Iron Man and the like!) essentially so that she can eat whatever the hell she likes!  Well we’re on exactly the same page there, so we got stuck in.

Rhiannon’s Cornish roots reared their head at every course – a starter of Cornish crab was served on sourdough with pink grapefruit, radish and samphire – a winning combination of unexpected elements.  My “in-season soup” was cream of celeriac, with a soft poached egg at the centre.  Maybe it’s OTT to get so excited about soup, but this was without a doubt the most delicious I have ever eaten – the kind that makes you wish the bowl was bottomless!

Cornwall again for the main course – Cornish fish of the day impressed Rhiannon, with slow cooked salsify, beetroot and chestnut.  I couldn’t resist the Somerset short rib of beef, with glazed beetroot, potato puree and horseradish cream.  Wonderfully carnivorous, it was fab February food.

I was totally stuffed as we got to dessert, but still ordered Trinity burnt cream (crème brulée), vowing to do a super-long workout the next morning.  A Choco Banana Old Fashioned digestif, served over a tennis ball-sized sphere of ice, slid down easily though!
