Clerkenwell has become a brunch-seeker’s mecca, with a host of lovely spaces serving enticing weekend menus to satisfy the breakfast/lunch cravings that insist on hitting between the hours of mid-morning and mid-afternoon on a Saturday and Sunday. Australian Granger & Co is one such space that is quite a delight to while away a brunchtime in.
Australian chef and food writer Bill Granger has restaurants far and wide, from Sydney to Honolulu and now London. His Clerkenwell space features full-height loft-style windows and is so flooded with light as to overexpose every single photo that is taken there.
Bill Granger’s restaurants reflect his Australian spirit – they’re sunny, easygoing and generous, and they’re bright and breezy, and super friendly. This approach to dining is a welcome one, and has certainly been key in the success of Granger & Co – which has all ballooned from a single Darlinghurst restaurant twenty years ago, famous for the best scrambled eggs and hotcakes in town!
This relaxed oh-so-Australian approach and Bill’s infectious joy in good, fresh food extends a warm welcome to everyone, and the birthday brunch I attended was leisurely and heavenly. With Clamato Bloody Marys and White Peach Bellinis for some, and a frappé of Allpress espresso, almond milk and avocado for me (a surprisingly winning combo!), we kicked off in high spirits, placing orders for big breakfasts.
Following my avocado coffee, I continued the theme of ordering the most unusual item on the menu, plumping for courgette fritters served with halloumi, tahini yoghurt, parsley salad and a deep fried egg for £11! The egg had been soft boiled, peeled, and very lightly fried to give it a gentle crunch – and the whole dish was really quite delicious.
The array of bakery items was enough to make you drool too.
Granger & Co’s dinner menu covers everything from pizzettas (£8.50), to small tapas-style plates that take inspiration from around the world (about £8 a pop), to meat-heavy BBQ items (the Sticky Chilli Belly Pork sounds pretty divine, for £17.20).
A bright and breezy Australian all-rounder in the heart of Clerkenwell – what’s not to love?
