Escape Hunt invites you to head to the city of London and descend down several flights of stairs to a basement, where you and your friends will be locked in an old-fashioned room for an hour. Doesn’t sound like the most exciting way to spend an evening, right?
So wrong. Once you and your friends are inside, the aim of the game is to work as a team to escape the room before the clock hits zero, through a series of challenging tasks, ambiguous clues and confusing red herrings. One clue leads to another leads to another, in an adrenaline-fuelled race against time to solve the mystery.
Escape Hunt is the latest of the live escape games to hit London (I’ve previously played clueQuest) where players are locked in a simple room, giving the feel of being inside a computer game. The team must search for clues and solve puzzles in an attempt to escape – kind of like a real-life version of The Crystal Maze TV show, and similar to the addictive smartphone game The Room.
With over 30 outposts all over the world, it is Escape Hunt’s size that makes it so unique in the live escape game arena, as it offers multiple identical rooms so that teams can race against each other. Addicts can return to Escape Hunt to try several different themed rooms (there are 3 to choose from, all varying slightly in escape success rate).
With a success rate of around 50%, this is a seriously exhilarating way to spend 60 minutes, and is a great activity for team building, family bonding, competitive friends or keen computer gamers. To play, you just need 2-5 players, a booking (book online here for about £25 per person) and an enquiring mind – no previous skills are necessary, you just need to think outside the box, collaborate as a team, and get ready for the most mind-bendingly challenging and frantically fun hour of your life!
