The Joint Marylebone: Brixton's BBQ eatery goes upmarket

Living in Brixton, The Joint is my go-to eatery when hunger strikes.  It’s super casual and rough ‘n’ ready – just as a Brixton Village Market eatery should be – with tables fashioned from plastic crates, BYOB and a no bookings policy.

But now The Joint team have taken a rather unpredictable leap and opened a restaurant in Marylebone.  And any Londoner knows that Brixton and Marylebone are very different places.  But somehow it works – they’ve totally nailed it.

The rough ‘n’ readiness has been polished up to create a proper bricks and mortar restaurant with real tables and benches that’s still casual but is somewhat slicker.  Arty graffiti covers the walls, cocktails flavoured with homemade syrups are served in jam jar glasses, and they actually take reservations!

Just as in Brixton, the slow cooked BBQ pulled pork is so tender that the juices run down your arm as you take a bite, and the giant buns (flavoured with vanilla and fig, and made with the help of Brixton Prison’s Bad Boy Bakery) are a menu stalwart, stuffed with candied apple bacon, coleslaw and mountains of meat.

The Joint stays faithful to its roots by serving side dishes in the same string-tied paper parcels and mains on paper plates – perhaps they’re saving the crockery for an even posher future outpost in Mayfair?!
