On a coffee break from work this week, I discovered Attendant. 5 minutes walk from Oxford Circus, on Foley Street, Attendant is no ordinary coffee bar. I mean, it’s not often that you find hipster baristas serving good coffee and to-die-for cakes in a former public toilet from the Victorian era, is it?!
Built around 1890, the below-street-level toilet was taken out of use in the 1960s, and was left empty for over fifty years before being transformed into its modern day self. What was previously the toilet attendant’s office is now a miniature kitchen, the original porcelain urinals form an inspired coffee bench, the original green Victorian floor tiles can still be seen on the floor, and there’s still a toilet cistern on the wall!
Some modern updates have been added however – like the array of stylish light fittings throughout the place (we may have been underground, but this place is far from dingy), and super snazzy coffee machine churning out delicious beverages.
Attendant focuses on carefully sourced, quality ingredients. A sign above the bar proudly states that drinks are made using organic milk from Jersey cows “who happily graze on a blend of grass and clover in Somerset”, the coffee beans are their own house blend, and all the food is made on site, in the aforementioned tiny kitchen. Now that’s dedication.
Drop by for coffee, cake, breakfast (from almond milk porridge to French toast) or lunch (soups, breads, salads and more). Barbut and I drank a latte and a flat white, and indulged in the most delicious salted caramel brownie I have ever tasted. With salted crystals on the top, a thick layer of oozing caramel and a gooey centre, it was absolutely divine.
I 100% recommend you hot-foot it over to Attendant asap! Quirk factor + fantastic brownies = happy blogger 🙂
