At Homeslice, size matters. This Neal’s Yard pizza joint churns out ginormous wood-fired 20-inchers that look like they’ve come straight out of an episode of Man v. Food. But how does it do in the Quality v. Quantity stakes?
Ideally located near Covent Garden, between two of the ‘dials’ of Seven Dials, Homeslice is one of those trendy-but-annoying places that doesn’t take reservations. And it gets busy. The restaurant is small, with lots of rustic wooden tables for group dining, so I’d suggest you rock up between Sunday and Wednesday to avoid the hoards.
Some pizzas are served by the slice (£4), or you can take advantage of the economies of scale and order a full 20″ cartwheel (£20). And conveniently, they let you go 50/50 with the toppings, so you can still share. Despite the fact that, mathematically, even half a 20″ pizza is so much larger than a regular 12″ from any normal pizzeria, we’ve always comfortably managed to polish off a whole one between two people when we’ve visited!
Toppings are interesting and seasonal, with the wood-fired pies being served on ginormous wooden boards, with a pizza wheel for cutting. Plates are paper, and there’s not even an option for cutlery – the restaurant doesn’t even actually have any – a fact which miffed the older woman on the table next to us…!
Favourite pizzas of mine include butternut, Colston Bassett sausage & crispy onion, or cauliflower cheese, Merguez sausage & curly kale. Bone marrow and haggis occasionally feature on the menu too!
Drinks-wise, there’s Camden Hells lager and Frizzante Classico prosecco on tap, plus a considered wine list with only one option of each colour.
Some people believe that there must be a trade-off when quantity and quality go head to head, but Homeslice really have found nirvana. Toppings are tasty and abundant, crusts are pillowy but not too much so, and half of a 20″ pizza is just the right amount of comfort food. Service is friendly and attentive, and if it really is too busy to get a seat, you can always do takeaway (call 020 7836 4604 to order ahead).
Best pizza in London?
I’ve been on a mission to find the best pizza in London for a while. Homeslice is great! But I still feel that there’s possibly something even better out there, I just have to find it. But for now, Homeslice will definitely hit the spot!
