A quick photo diary from this weekend – which has been awesome, and packed full of new places and exciting things. Let’s start with Friday night…
Friday night kicked off in Happiness Forgets, an underground speakeasy on Hoxton Square which describes its offering with the succint slogan of “Great cocktails. No wallies.” I can 100% vouch for the cocktails – the Old Fashioneds blew my mind! We ordered one with bourbon and one with rye, in order to taste test – the bourbon was a clear winner in my eyes, orange aromas perfectly balanced with a smooth flavour and notes of chocolate (!?) served over a giant block of ice. The best I’ve ever had, for sure.
Next up, we headed for Story Deli on Bethnal Green Road – Chris’ favourite restaurant, he said. You can’t book at Story Deli, and the exterior of the restaurant is very low key. Inside it’s all white and rustic and minimalist, and very small – just three or four long sharing tables, and storage boxes that double as seats (handy for stowing coats and bags in).
The menu is simple (pizza) but interesting, and 100% organic. We ordered three pizzas (£17 each) plus a bottle of red (£30) – our server’s hands were covered in flour – I liked the authenticity! It’s not cheap, but the pizzas were amazing – possibly some of the best I’ve found in London, with really thin crusts with big air bubbles, and generous toppings, served on simple wooden boards. We shared a Charlie Jones, Dora Romero and Ham, Blue Cheese & Spinach – all highly recommended, but I don’t think you can go wrong with anything in Story Deli, to be honest. We finished up with a chocolate brownie and a berry cheesecake, with three spoons.
Not satisfied with visiting two fantastic venues in one night, we added another one to the list. Well & Bucket is a very trendy, buzzy pub on Bethnal Green Road, with interesting artwork and good bar snacks too (Katie’s lobster roll was impressive).
But there’s more to Well & Bucket than first appears. Down a neon lit stairway off to one side is 5cc, a basement speakeasy cocktail bar serving unusual cocktails (£9) in a dimly lit, leather clad interior. A new 5cc also just opened this week in the city, below Harrild & Sons, meaning there are now three 5cc bars to find and enjoy in London.
We called it a day after these top three destinations, but can definitely recommend them all – and they’re perfectly located to do all three in one night.
