Crosby Street Hotel: Design hotel in SoHo, New York

With six super successful hotels in England (including London’s Soho Hotel and Haymarket Hotel), Tim and Kit Kemp were just the people to take trademark quirky London style stateside with their first American venture.  The Crosby Street Hotel is situated in New York City’s SoHo, between Prince, Spring and Lafayette. An all-new construction, completely designed from scratch on a vacant parking lot, and showcasing a style that backs up Kit’s many interior design accolades, Crosby Street Hotel has 86 individually designed bedrooms and suites over 11 floors, featuring floor-to-ceiling warehouse style windows, hand-picked artworks and exceptional styling.  Since I was visiting the Big Apple anyway, I thought it would be rude not to have a nose around!

The ground floor is an airy space where wood, metal, glass and stone blend to stunning effect.  Wide grey oak floorboards sit alongside soaring metal-framed windows and doors, which provide lots of natural light. The lobby is dominated by a dramatic 10 foot high Jaume Plensa steel sculpture of a human head created from letters of the alphabet – in fact wherever you look, Kit Kemp’s eclectic collection of modern art is evident – an interesting Peter Clark dog collage here, mixed-media pieces by Justine Smith and Jack Milroy there…

The Crosby Bar is adjacent to the lobby, and is the perfect spot for breakfast, coffee, lunch or cocktails.  A vast space with high ceilings stretching from Crosby Street right through to Lafayette Street, it too has wide grey oak floorboards and a long pewter bar watched-over by a wooden sculpture of an oversized Dodo bird.  Chairs and banquettes are covered in chic, colourful fabrics that range from bright stripes to subdued deep greens, and the art is varied and ranges from African ASAFO flags to an eye-catching collection of wall-mounted vintage Bakelite telephone lights.

The hotel’s colourful drawing room is characterized by deep patchwork sofas, organic objects in wood and large oil paintings by artist Francois Bard. My tip: indulge in the decadent afternoon tea while revelling in the surroundings. The ground floor interior is softened by a tranquil view looking out onto a spacious leafy sculpture garden (such a rarity in NYC’s concrete jungle), or you can head to the hotel’s private state-of-the-art cinema, with its 99 orange leather Poltrona Frau chairs and violet wool-padded walls, to truly escape the bustle of the city.

The suites are spacious and light, with high ceilings and large oversized warehouse-style windows, edged in metal that perfectly frames the spectacular views of the downtown skyline.  Each room is individually designed – some with bold colour and pattern, others more tailored and neutral, but all with a tall head board, sleek modern furniture and specially designed lighting. Sumptuous fabrics give way to chic wallpapers, and beautiful antiques sit harmoniously alongside custom designed pieces throughout.
