I loved Islington’s Chinese Laundry from the moment I set eyes on the pink facade on Instagram (captured above and below by @richardleemassey, one of my favorite London ‘grammers). It’s 1980s-inspired, it’s kitsch and it’s just plain fun – all day home-style Chinese dining, washed down with a selection of unusual and punchy Baiju cocktails (an ancient Chinese spirit made from fermented sorghum).
The Laundry’s owners are former fashion and jewellery designers, and had a strong vision for the place – there’s lots of granny chic lace, retro palm leaf paper, mismatched traditional blue and white plates, and oriental ornaments. It’s playful and inviting – and terribly Instagrammable.
Think small plates of sweet basil chicken popcorn, trice-cooked pork belly, century egg and grilled aubergine at dinner; the brunch offering is a savoury, egg-heavy affair. Munch happily on more-ish White Rabbit milk sweets as you pay up, delivered with the bill.
Meal for two with a cocktail each: £60.
