Berber & Q opened in Haggerston earlier this year, and has been impressing diners ever since with its unusual dishes and style. I too have fallen for its charms – so why do I urge you to go there?
1. Great setting – another restaurant in a railway arch! They’ve really made the most of the space, with great lighting and good sturdy furniture.
3. If you love meat. Tell your vegetarian friends to stay home, because it’s all about the the meat grills, and Oh. My. Gosh.
Inspiration is taken from all over the place, with ingredients and flavours from the Middle East, North Africa and across the Ottoman, brought to fruition with Western cooking techniques and grilled over charcoal. Some meats are smoked first, all are marinated and basted in their own juices, and all the ones we tried were fantastic.
Order one main meat dish and 1-2 mezzes per person; food is served on one central tray for sharing. The pulled lamb and beef short rib were the stand-out meats at our table, and every one of the mezze side dishes was phenomenal – think blackened aubergine, beets with whipped feta, and baba ghanoush. You will be impressively fed for £25 a head.
Wash it all down with cocktails (the amusingly named Haggerstoned combines tequila and pistachio syrup!) or own-brew ale from CRATE Brewery.
