Find me a coffee snob who doesn’t love Kaffeine, and I’ll be amazed. Even the owners of other Fitzrovia coffee shops name Kaffeine as a favourite, and it’s easy to see why.
Kaffeine first opened in 2009, right when speciality coffee stops were just starting out. It is now regarded as one of the leading cafes in the UK, setting an example and a benchmark for all other cafes to follow.
There are two Kaffeine cafés, on Great Titchfield and Eastcastle Streets. Both are Australian inspired, and small but perfectly formed. I favour the newer Eastcastle branch as a result of gym/office proximity (it’s on that street that runs parallel to Oxford Street, and is the perfect route between Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus, away from the craziness of Oxford Street), and also the outdoor seating area, with sturdy benches on the pavement beneath the black awning.
The focus is quite simply on excellent coffee. The baristas all have at least three years experience behind a professional espresso machine, and are continuously in pursuit of perfecting the art of espresso making.
Alongside the espresso-based drinks you’ll find beautifully packaged drool-worthy baked goods. My poison of choice tends to be an almond milk iced latte to drink pavementside – and inevitably something sweet from the cake counter 🙂
With a clean-lined interior and neon signage, the Eastcastle branch is newer and slicker in its aesthetic; the Great Titchfield Street café is the original, and is ever so slightly rougher around the edges. But regardless of looks, the coffee is consistently excellent in both!
