On occasion, a bar hidden behind a bookcase is just what you need – when you need to really impress on a date, for example, or when you want to dodge the hoards in favour of somewhere a little more clandestine. Milroy’s of Soho has recently relaunched as a whisky specialist, tasting bar and shop; but hidden in the basement is the little secret you were looking for: The Vault.
Access to The Vault is not sign-posted, so memorise these instructions, and then boldly make your way to the back of the Milroy’s shop, past dusty bottles and experts talking drams, to the bookcase. Turn to your right and put your whole weight against the bookcase at the end. You are going to look silly for just a second, trying to move a seemingly unmovable object, but when the heavy door starts to groan open, your audacity will be rewarded.
Down in the basement you’ll find a hidden gem below the cobbled streets of Soho. Original seasonal drinks made with home-infused spirits (not just whisky) form the cocktail menu. A Di Barrel, with cherry wood-infused bourbon and maraschino, served with a Chartreuse sugar shard, slid down nicely!
If whisky is your prerogative, the copper-topped bar on the ground floor of Milroy’s might be a better fit, serving over 250 whiskies poured at 35ml. If you want to invest, you can try before you buy, and get the key to your own personal whisky locker for storage if you purchase a bottle over £200! There are also casks, giving customers a chance to pour their own bottles, or make their own blends.
Milroy’s + The Vault is a revitalised venue to delight whisky aficionados, cocktail lovers and those curious to discover more. You don’t get much more impressive date venues than those hidden behind bookcases – you can thank me later for your new-found Tinder success 😉
