Berlin seems to be the holiday destination du jour, and my top restaurant recommendation to everyone who visits is in the Mitte district: Lokal. So far, each and everyone one of these tipped-off diners has sent me a message – often as they’re sitting in the restaurant still eating! – to agree with me on how awesome Lokal is.
The Lokal owner is an odd one – she’s actually against any kind of publicity; the official website gives little away and there are no reviews of the place to be found, assumedly to preserve some mystery around this absolute gem! However it was pleasantly buzzing on our visit – the rave reviews must be spreading by word of mouth!
Aesthetically inclined diners will appreciate the food just as much, where presentation is a key focus. The menu is all in German, so our waiter talked us through it, dish by dish, ingredient by ingredient, as we munched our way through a board of fresh bread and flavoured butter – I have a tendency to judge a place on its bread basket, and this was good!
Homely farm-to-table dishes are Lokal’s raison d’être – simple, seasonal ingredients and effective flavour pairings. Lamb cutlets, Beef Wellington, pork belly, seasonal vegetables and sea bass all hit the mark, washed down with a delicious German Riesling (always so well-priced in Berlin).
A shared apple strüdel for dessert left us fat and happy, and we resolved to tell anyone who shares our love of good food, wine and design about this place. Consider it done!
Take my word for it and hit Lokal for dinner – and be sure to message me while you’re there to confirm just how awesome it is!
