I was familiar with The Barn even before landing in Berlin – its glowing reputation as a coffee shop and roaster had come up in coffee conversations back home on multiple occasions. The Barn has two outposts, both in Berlin’s Mitte district; one is a small café, the other is much larger, housing the roaster, stacks of sacks of beans, and a large brew bar.
The smaller coffee shop is cosy, with a No Prams rule, and a limitation on laptop useage – forced relaxation is the order of the day! We drank espresso and AeroPress inside the rustic wooden interior while chatting to the friendly Aussie barista.
It’s the perfect chance to try all the coffees in a wine tasting style session, to chat to the baristas and other participants (our session was frequented by an eclectic mix of coffee shop owners, baristas, addicts and novices!) and have a nose around the impressive roaster and brewing equipment.
The Roastery also operates a ban on laptops and prams, but the relaxed escapist atmosphere encourages convivial groups of hipsters to gather at the low tables, indulging in sweet and savoury snack options alongside their perfect brews.
