All those who know The Riding House Café love The Riding House Café, so when founder Clive Watson threw open the doors of new restaurant Blixen on the perimeter of Spitalfields Market in Shoreditch, I made a brunch booking sharpish.
The ground floor restaurant progresses past dining booths housed in a plant-filled pergola, out to an undercover garden. Additionally, there’s a moodily lit cocktail bar and private dining room located in the basement – formerly the bank’s safe!
Brunch at Blixen is dreamy – sunshine-flooded, bright and breezy, you can sit back and enjoy fresh juices and smoothies alongside your Toasted Banana Bread, Blueberry Pancakes with Cinnamon Mascarpone & Cumquat, or Croque Madam.
On our visit, Potato Rosti with Salt Beef & a Poached Egg (£8.50) was small but flavoursome, and a ginormous portion of House Nut & Seed Granola (£5.50) was served with yoghurt and fresh berries, and was so huge it kept us munching for a while!
The all day menu is contemporary and well-crafted – light lunch dishes of salads, soups and sandwiches are replaced by a European-style dinner menu come evening – think Crumbed Ox Tongue Salad, Monkfish Tail and Rhubarb Meringue Roulade.
If the perpetual busyness of The Riding House Café is anything to go by, you can expect it to be just as difficult to secure a table at Blixen very soon – so clear a space in your diary and head here to make an appointment at 65A Brushfield Street asap.
