Barry’s Bootcamp combines intense cardio with resistance training, and claims to burn 1000 calories in a single hour – backing up it’s mission statement of “The Best Workout in the World”!
I’d heard about Barry’s, and knew the workout would be hardcore, but was pleased to note that the other clientele gathering outside the studio before the start time seemed relatively normal, and not a bunch of pro athletes. It was also good to see that although Barry’s comes from Hollywood, the attendees were not the types to workout in a full face of make up and designer clothing. So far so good.
Every need has been covered, with a free towel service, bottles of water, hair ties and lockers all laid on. The changing rooms are swanky, with showers complete with Malin+Goetz products, and hair dryers and straighteners.
When it’s time for the class to start, the group (of around 30 people) enters the studio, and opts for either a treadmill (“tread“) or a weights bench (“floor“) to start on. With a banging soundtrack and low red lighting, you would be forgiven for thinking that your workout was about to take place in a nightclub.
The trainer (keep an eye out for my faves, master trainers Shane Collins and Anya Lahiri!) gives instructions to both the treads and floor groups through a microphone, motivating and counting you in for different exercises, and berating you if your run speed isn’t where it should be!
The class is split into sets, moving between the floor and the tread. You might be doing squats, burpees, dead lifts and crunches with dumbbells, and then you’ll move to the treadmill for a set of intervals – maybe pyramids of jog-run-sprint, or incline running. You’ll be grateful for the red lighting that is flattering to even the reddest face!
The floor/tread sets keep going, until the full hour is up – usually with some sort of sprint finish finale to really knock you out!
After showering, hit the Fuel Bar for a protein shake (they have a huge selection of shakes to choose from, all seriously tasty). Be warned that your first couple of classes are going to wipe you out – and you’ll definitely feel it the next day! A sure sign that the workout was effective, eh?!
Barry’s proudly boasts: “Kim Kardashian, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Biel, Katie Holmes and Jake Gyllenhaal know how to look good. What do they have in common? Barry’s Bootcamp’s 1000 calorie workout.” Ellie Goulding is also a big fan – with master trainer Faisal as her personal trainer.
At £20 a session, it’s not cheap (though you can buy classes in bulk to get a slightly better rate per class), but it’s certainly effective – and incredibly addictive! Barry’s is my workout of choice – you can guarantee a challenging but rewarding class every time, and nothing beats the high of smashing a PB on the tread under those red lights!
