Are you sick of me going on about Soho coffee spots yet? No, I didn’t think you would be when they’re all this good! Today, another Department of Coffee – a quiet coffee haven just off busy Carnaby Street (formerly known as Speakeasy).
One of the great and highly unusual things about this place is that it’s table service, making it a great venue for catch ups and casual meetings. The interior is bright and breezy and kind of Scandinavian in style. It’s totally unfussy which means there’s no distraction from the great coffee – except maybe the array of cakes laid out on the counter – they can be pretty distracting…!
I recommend grabbing a seat plus an armful of the independent magazines available for customer’s to digest (my favourite is Courier), and ordering from the (rather long) menu. (Takeaway is available too, though.)
Definitely ask the staff if you can’t make up your mind – the hot drink selection is wide, and covers different brewing methods (Filtro to Pour Over to French Press), a couple of different espressos (always a Coffeesmiths Espresso Blend and a weekly-changing Feature Espresso) and a variety of teas.
Another little thing that the Department of Coffee offers is a weekly drop-in coffee training session, where you can learn barista tips and tricks for making your own pitch-perfect Department-style coffee at home. Every Thursday between 5pm and 7pm – just turn up and pick the baristas’ brains.
