Mayfair pub The Running Horse is a cut above the rest. The oldest public house and kitchen in Mayfair it may be, but The Running Horse is a far cry from the other “old man pubs” in the area.
The brainchild of James Chase (of Chase distillery) and Dominic Jacobs (former bar director at sketch), and supported by competent and friendly staff, this super stylish establishment has got all bases covered.
Just last month the pub started serving breakfast – and what a breakfast! Chris and I devoured porridge (£4) and corn beef hash with Clarence Court duck eggs (£11) [him] and an avocado filled with Burford Brown eggs and baked, with Wiltshire dry cured bacon and sourdough (£8) [me]. There’s also a lobster croissant on the menu which sounds pretty damn fine!
The caffeine fix came in the form of Cornwall’s Origin coffee.
I visited again for breakfast just today – the TRH team welcomed a huge group of 16 of us, and everyone agreed it was the perfect start to the working day.
Or you can pop by for an upmarket pub lunch or dinner (menu here), with eye-catching classics such as Shepherds Pie, Guinea Fowl Burger with “Jockey’s Whips” (chips?), and Scottish smoked salmon & crab salad (from £12). The cocktail (£10), beer and wine menu is also impressive.
If you fancy raising the style stakes a notch further, take the stairs up to cocktail bar The Whip on the first floor. Decked out in jockey’s silks, with striking grand furniture, and specialising in Juleps, my birthday drinks at The Whip were a great success back in July.
An all-rounder that’s bitten off more than it can chew? Certainly not. The Running Horse and The Whip seem to tick all the boxes, for any time of day, combining a top notch menu with quality cocktails and a good dose of interior style.
