“The best tasting and most succulent, lovingly prepared rotisserie experience.” This is what Clockjack Oven in Soho claims to be – so obviously I had to pop down to Denman Street to check it out!
My first trip to Clockjack was with a big group of friends – we took over the long table at the front of the restaurant and ordered the entire menu, which was perfect for “research purposes” for Have You Heard Of It?!
I returned again just today, in another huge group, for a colleague’s leaving do. Clockjack are always more than happy to help with bookings and awkwardly large groups!
When free-range, ethically-reared chickens from a co-operative of Brittany farms are combined with rotisserie cooking, you get the most flavoursome and super succulent chicken dishes. The chicken is marinated in soft herb brine before the intense rotisserie heat crisps the skin, and the rotation results in tender, succulent meat.
Stand-out dishes were the Buttermilk Chicken Bites (£5.95), served with barbecue and ranch sauces for finger-licking dipping, and the Clockjack Club Sandwich (£8.75), where shredded rotisserie chicken, smoked bacon, herb stuffing, mayo and plum tomatoes come sandwiched between fresh sourdough slices to great effect. The Sweetcorn, Jim Bean Bourbon & Honey side dish (£3.95) makes for an unusual accompaniment.
For when your uneducated companions are craving Nando’s or some other such foodie blasphemy, instead steer them to Clockjack, for a high class, full flavour dinner at near-Nando’s prices. Clockjack brings meaning to the phrase “Winner winner chicken dinner“.
