Bone Daddies is not your average ramen bar. New York-inspired, blasting rock ‘n’ roll music, walls collaged with pictures and cartoons of Japanese rockabillies, this is indeed far from typical. Owned by the same team as Flesh & Buns, another favourite of mine, Bone Daddies frequently make the shortlist for London’s Best Ramen, and is far superior to chain-tastic Wagamama.
The queue for Bone Daddies has a tendency to get very long, so be tactical in your visit time as they don’t take reservations. Dining takes place on stools at high communal tables, and service is fast but informal.
We ordered green teas and mocktails, but the sake and cocktail menu was tempting.
Katie’s spicy kimchee and seafood ramen was bright orange, topped with a huge prawn and soft boiled egg – the verdict was positive, once she’d got used to the spice!
My Tonkotsu ramen was delicious, containing chashu pork, spring onions and a soft boiled egg, in a 20-hour pork bone broth. The flavours were clean and punchy, and the noodles soft without being stodgy.
I’ve never had ramen before, but have since visited Koya Bar (similar, but with Udon noodles), and am now a big noodle fan. This is the most comforting of comfort food, perfect on a hangover, but certainly not a light meal.
